When one thinks of quality food at an affordable price, one does not think about a restaurant attached to a gas station, unless they’re thinking about the best Mexican food in Ashland: Suplex Tacos. Nestled in a Shell station on 13th Street in Ashland is, in my humble opinion, one of the best Mexican restaurants this side of the Mississippi. Hailing from sunny southern California, Sergio and Ron Garcia brought their special authentic recipe to Ashland in 2012 and it has since become a staple of Ashland culture.
The “Home of the Six-One-Nine Burrito” features a fast-food style menu of southwestern foods with always fresh ingredients and fast service, along with walls adorned with “Lucha libre” photographs, the Latin American term for professional wrestling.
The famous Six-One-Nine burrito is a customer favorite, filled with french fries and steak or grilled chicken. My favorites are the Champ Burrito (steak burrito) and the appropriately-named Atlantis Burrito (fish burrito). The menu also includes a kid’s menu so that everyone in the family can grab something amazing to eat!
The Garcia Brothers have floated ideas of expansion, and in an interview with The Daily Independent, Ron said “We would love to have locations in Grayson, Greenup, and more places in Boyd County,” and I look forward to this expansion. I think that naturally the Huntington market would be a solid choice should the brothers decide on it.
I highly recommend Suplex Tacos to anyone who has yet to try it! In my years of buying food from them, I have never had a bad experience; in fact, at a time when I was less financially stable, the owners comped a burrito when my card declined, and that itself was enough to turn me into a loyal customer. To this day I think about that moment every time I visit Suplex Tacos, and I am still appreciative of the kind gesture that the owners made for me on that day, and I hope that you too will become a loyal supporter of the best Mexican food in Ashland.
